Re Algarve Walks No 13
Tried to get to SENHORA DA ROCHA. Ran into difficulties after PRAIA DE ALBANDEIRA. Could not see where it would be possible to ascend to the valley floor safely and onto the beach. I think more directions are needed.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I have recently purchased a copy of the above book as I very much enjoy walking in this area of Portugal, near to where I live. So far, there have been good route directions on most of the walks undertaken, however, on the last walk, I have had to abandon finishing the route due to misunderstood instructions which appear in the text as vague and the distances given to alter direction not correct. The route was number 32 "on the Rio Arade" where there appeared to be no fork after 200 metres of entering the "sparse eucalyptus wood" and consequently the remainder of the walk had to be aborted. On the same walk there is an alternative "number 2" to make a circular walk on the Ilha do Rosario beginning at the restaurant "Mira Rio". The text states "1 1/2 kms on, turn left onto a narrow tarmac road......." It does not however explain which direction to take from the restaurant ie. either left or right from the car park! I would appreciate it if you could re-check this route.

Sehr geehrter Leser,
Hier eine Bemerkung / Verbesserungsvorschlag zum Wanderführer ALGARVE von Ulrich Enzel (English Translation).
Wir sind soeben von der Algarve zurückgekehrt und haben Wanderung 32 "On the Rio Arade" versucht. Leider mit wenig Erfolg.
Hier drei Anregungen:
Seite 108: "immediately after onto a trail keeping to the right of an orange grove....." Das stimmt noch; allerdings ist jetzt auf der rechten Seite dieses Pfades inzwischen der Hauptparkplatz für Silves in Bau. Das Ist nicht unbedingt ein schöner Anblick. Vielleicht könnte man hier einen anderen Pfad aussuchen.
Seite 108, 2. Absatz: "At the beginning of the aqueduct, a path descending right leads to a road,....": Falls man wirklich bis zum Beginn des Aquaduktes weiterläuft landet man auf einem Abfallhaufen... Die Beschreibung sollte lauten: "ungefähr 50m vor Beginn des Aquaduktes läuft der Pfad schräg nach rechts einer verfallenen Mauer folgend..." Vielleicht ist das auch nur ein Problem der englischen Übersetzung.
Seite 108, 2. Absatz: Die Windmühle ist inzwischen schön restauriert. Auffallend sind die kleinen Tongefässe an den Enden der Flügel, die singende Töne im Wind verursachen.
Seite 108, 4. Absatz: "Here and at another junction 150 m on, bear right. In a sparse eucalyptus wood reach a fork and turn sharply left...." Wenn man dieser Beschreibung folgt kommt man auf einen extrem steilen Waldweg, der direkt ins Tal geht und wahrscheinlich eine Steigung von 45 Grad hat. Dieser Pfad ist kaum zu bewandern und allenfalls durch Forstmaschinen zu befahren. Unsere Kinder blieben auf halben Wege stehen und heulten vor Angst. Unten im Tal sind durch die Waldrodung 4 Wege entstanden, von denen 2 scharf nach links gehen. Bitte hier die Beschreibung kontrollieren und anpassen an die neuen Umstände.
Hiernach haben wir diese Wanderung abgebrochen und sind direkt zur Festung zurückgelaufen.

I can find no other way of beginning this email than to say that the book named in the title I bought in all good faith in the U.K. in preparation for a holiday which I took last week to the Algarve in Portugal. I intended having a delightful week walking in the Algarve and using your book as my guide. It is awful, it lacks any detail in order that a walk can be followed and also appears to be totally wrong for the three walks we undertook.
Walk 21 There is no turn off to Bias do Sul. We searched the area for two hours using the freytag & berndt map and could find nothing that even gave us a clue as to where to go.
Walk 43 talks about a suspension bridge which I can promise you does not exist.
Walk 33 is a delightful walk but is impossible from your book to follow.
We began by thinking something had gone wrong in the translation from German into English until on walk 33 we met a German couple. They were also following your book, but German version, and they also were totally lost. With helping each other and from various other people we met we were able to complete a walk albeit with not much help from your book.
