Wanderführer Norway South
 | 03.09.2004 |
Dear Sirs
My Wife and I have just returned from a holiday in Norway where we used your walking guide "Norway, south". We found this rather disappointing compared with your excellent walking guide to Sicily which we used last year. This may be due, in part, to the translation, which is sometimes rather odd, but there is at least one error in the route descriptions which I think you should check in the original in case it is not due to mis-translation.
Translation
Page 10 Heading "Outdoor camping" - In this context all camping is outdoor. Camping away from an organised camp site is often termed "Wild camping".
Page 98 "..sparsely marked walk, due to rock piles,.." does not mean anything to me.
Page 118 "In back of the DNT mountain hotel .." "In back of" is not English though it may be American.
General
Page 14 Toll roads. It would be helpful to describe the system.
At the Bomstasjon you will find a box containing combination ticket/envelopes. Enter the date and your car number on the ticket and detach it from the envelope. Put your coins in the envelope, seal it, and drop it in the slot in the box. Display the ticket in your car.
Route descriptions
Route 6
Page 47 "... ends at a forlorn farm .. ". This implies that it is dilapidated, deserted, or isolated. It is now none of these. There is a new access track from the bridge west of Oyne which has obliterated the forest path. Many of the information boards have been moved or removed. We saw the signs to the beaver dens, but they were lying on the ground beside the track.
Route 25
Page 90 "Starting point: Car park charging a fee (20m) .. " I assume this should be "(20 Kr)", the parking charge to be put in an "Honesty Box".
Page 90 Map. We crossed the stream where it flows out of the Skalavatnet and found a marked path leading directly to the summit of Vesleskala.
Page 91. "At the lake, the steep descent, .." I am sure this should be ascent ! The only way down from the lake is the way back to the valley. Please check the original.
Route 28
Page 98 Map
Page 99 Route description. We didn't, at first, follow the route shown on your map but did what most other people did. That is, follow the path, shown in black on your map, to Hogvaglen and then follow the ridge towards Kyrkjeoksli until level with the col at 1755 metres. This route is a good path in parts and is well marked with cairns and with red "T"s in the lower part. It may be longer but is much easier, and probably quicker, than the route you show, which we followed on our way down. The 1518 ll Galdhopiggen map shows the path which starts along the shoreline then turning up to Hogvaglen.
Route 36
Page 118 Map
Page 118 Route description. I can not be certain about this point as we didn't go down to Rondvassbu but left the track at a high point to go directly to the beginning of the ridge, but it seems most unlikely that, on the route from Rondvassbu, there is "a constant downhill slope" to the beginning of the ridge. The signed turnoff is a long way up.
Page 119 There is more than one "stone hunting stand". The first is only 10 minutes up from the signed turnoff - the one you show is about another 30 minutes further. People could be led to think they are nearer the summit than they really are.
I hope these comments are of interest.
Yours, Tom Andrews, GB-London
